The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) is an independent, non-governmental body which classify/rate films and games according to their content. They then divide these into one of 7 categories; U, PG, 12, 12a, 15, 18, R18 (12a is purely for cinema and enables children under the age of 12 to view the film when accompanied by an adult, without an adult however, they must be above the age of 12. R18 is adult material sold in shops and shown only in specific cinemas, so excluding these two there are five different categories). A 'U' is a film suitable for audiences of all ages as it contains little or no violence, no foul language or scenes of an adult nature. 'PG' stands for parental guidance and basically means that parents may want to view the film beforehand to see if it is suitable for their children. the numbered rating systems are basically classified according to age, e.g. you must be 15 or over to view a 15. this is because they may contain foul language, sexual/explicit scenes or strong violence.

Lord of the Rings: The two towers
Lord of the rings is a typical fantasy/action film, and fits with its conventions very closely. These are firstly that it contains creatures that cannot exist in real life, this is shown by the fact in the opening sequence we have the balrog which is a mythical fire demon and then gandalf who is a wizard. as we can see these are not real. Another convention is that it contains battles this fits with the conventions of it being a action film, we know this as we see a battle shown in the opening sequence.
The title is shown straight away as you would expect in an opening sequence, we also get a brief introduction to the main characters in the opening sequence as you would also expect in an opening sequence.


Rat Race
Rat race fits with the conventions of a comedy adventure very closely. These are firstly as it contains different humourous animation at the start where the bodies are animated and the heads are large and realistic.We are then introduced to all the main characters whilst the theme tune plays in the background, which is upbeat, adventurous african music. This is child friendly. We know this is an adventure film as throughout the title sequence we are seeing different things happening like the characters playing tricks on each other and moving about.

Firstly we get an arial establishing shot of victorian london which immediately gives us the setting of the film and a general idea of the era. The title of the film is printed over this camera shot in large bold letters to get the audiences attention, and is written in a curved text thats is quite pleasing to the eye which shows that the film is intened to be pleasing overall.
The theme music is played straight from the start which is cheery band music that's quite upbeat and is used effectively to set the mood an atmosphere from the start. The camera then pans down into the city and then works its way around the streets which elaberates the atmosphere of the location and we see the day to day lives of the characters and general extras, so throughout the film we have an idea of whats going on all around outside of the main storyline.
We are introduced to the characters briefly as the camera pans around the streets before we get a better idea of the characters later on when the camera fixates on them. They often speak directly to the audience in the 1st person breaking the fourth wall to give general understanding of the story and make the audience feel more involved and related to the characters emotions and actions. The speak in quite simple yet melodramatic/over exadurated fashion to help the audience understand, this indicates that the target audience is quite young as they may not understand otherwise.
The target audience is also indicated as the characters break into song which is quite upbeat also (like the theme tune) which shows that the film is targeted at younger children as this is something they would enjoy.

the parent trap

in the opening sequence of 'the parent trap' there is an establishing shot of a ship which is where the wedding scene takes place. there are elements of editing which are shown by the opening credits and title fade in. this is effective because it tells the audience what the scene will be about and where it is set. during the credits there are shots of people dancing and talking. the camera does not show the two main characters faces until the end of the opening scene. this could make it more interesting and encourage the audience to watch more in order to find out about the main characters. during the dancing the are low shots from the feet to the knees and after that shot there is an aerial shot which is still of people dancing. the opening scene finishes with a zoom in of a photo of the main couple who are getting married on the boat. there is diegetic music which both the characters and the audience can hear which is the music being played at the wedding.  
in the next scene there is another establishing shot of a different location which is the camp the two daughters go to. the camera is on a crane and pans around the crowd of children. this is another effective shot which tells the audience where the next scene is going to take place but could confuse the audience as there are two new and different characters. there are a lot of medium shots which show conversations between two or more people. this means that the camera shots are from the waist upwards.

this is our final production i think it was very successful because the story makes sense it runs smoothly, one criticism i would say is that we didn't include a sound effect which we needed so for improvement we would of added a gunshot for effect and to make sense.
Also, if we were to do it again we would have taken more camera shots to give us a wider variety to choose from to get the most out of our filming experience.

here from our story board we have set the story on a spy/gun wielding teen who, in a very brief summary, walks into a room and kills a man. As you can see we have used all the continuity elements mentioned previously in the lesson that are shown on the sheet we were provided with.

How are the conventions constructed differently in the two film sequences?

The monsters inc opening sequence had quite upbeat jazz theme music which lasted for about a minute and a half, it gives it quite a happy/joyful atmosphere showing that it is an enjoyable film from the start. it is an animated sequence which is clearly designed for children as it has been simplified for children to understand, it shows that it would not represent everything in the real world. The sequence indicates what the general story is about as it shows monsters in the opening sequence, however it does not give us any indication of the storyline or who the characters are.

The Deathly hallows trailer is really different to monsters inc. in that it is film not animation and the target audience is considerably older, this is shown by the scenery which is dark and gloomy which compared to monsters inc. There is a vast contrast in colour. the music in this sequence is much more fast pace, as are the camera shots, which promotes a sense of urgency and action, which smaller children may not understand, which also illustrates that the target audience of this piece is intended to be higher. Unlike monsters inc. it does give an indication of the story line and the characters.
